Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowships for SC/ST Students


CSIRThe Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship (RGNF) Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes is formulated and funded by Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and Ministry of Tribal Affairs. The scheme is open to candidates who belong to Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe who wish to undertake advanced studies and research leading to M.Phil and Ph.D degrees (full-time) in Sciences.

There are 2000 slots for Scheduled Caste and 667 slots for Scheduled Tribe candidates every year for all the subjects.

The objective of this award is to provide fellowships in the form of financial assistance to such students in Indian Universities/Institutions/ Colleges and in Non-Universities/Institutions.SC/ST Candidates who have passed the Post Graduate examination in concerned subject and but have not acquired JRF of UGC-CSIR NET, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF and ICAR SRF can avail the fellowship. Unlike INSPIRE fellowships, another option to get financial assisstance without qualifying a national level examination where the candiadte has to join a reserach lab and get registered for PhD prior to applying for fellowship. Candidates aspiring for RGNF do not have the obligation to get registered for PhD on priorhand. Candidate are provided with two options, where they can propose a research topic forwarded by a supervisor from a selected research lab.

If they have already registered for PhD, they can straight away send the research topic on which they are working.However the candiadate has to register for the PhD program within two years from the date of award of the fellowship.

The tenure of fellowship is for a maximum period of five years. The candidate must get himself/herself registered for M.Phil./Ph.D at the first available opportunity but not later than within a period of two years from the receipt of award letter. The fellowship is initially sanctioned for two years but is extendable for another three years depending on the performance of the candidate in the research work accessed by a three member expert committee.

@Rs.16,000/-p.m. for initial two years RGN-JRF
@Rs.18,000/-p.m. for remaining tenure RGN-SRF

Contingency
@Rs.12,000/-p.a. for initial two years
@Rs.25,000/-p.a.for remaining tenure Science, Engg. & Technology

Departmental Assistance
@Rs. 3000/- p.a. per student to the host institution for providing infrastructure

Escorts/Reader assistance
@ Rs. 2000/- p.m. in cases of All Subject physically handicapped & blind candidates
